President Obama announced yesterday that he will nominate Gen. Martin Dempsey and ADM James Winnefeld to second terms as Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In making the announcement, Obama said “These two distinguished military leaders have earned my trust and that of the American people. I am inspired by their dedicated service to our great nation and the example they set for our women and men in uniform.”

Secretary Hagel expressed strong support for the renominations. At a news conference at the pentagon, Hagel said he was pleased that if the Senate confirms the nominations he will “have the opportunity to work with these two distinguished leaders of our country for another two years.”

Gen. Dempsey and ADM Winnefeld were confirmed to their first terms in 2011. Prior to assuming the chairmanship, Dempsey was Army Chief of Staff. Winnefeld was the Commander of North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) before becoming Vice Chairman.
