The Air Force initiated a 90-day hiring freeze on August 9, 2011.   According to a press announcement, the freeze will enable the Air Force to stay within constrained funding levels.   The announcement did not identify specific personnel level goals.

The Air Force will also reduce the number of temporary and term employees.   By taking these actions, the Air Force wants to quickly lower civilian strength levels now to allow for future hiring to meet mission needs.

Air Force leaders also hope that these actions, along with the implementation of  the Voluntary Separation Incentive Payment (VSIP) and Voluntary Early Retirement Authority (VERA) programs, will obviate the need for involuntary actions.

“We are mindful of the potential impacts of budget constraints on our civilian force and their families, which is why we are seeking to reduce the need for involuntary measures,” said Lt. Gen. Darrell Jones, Deputy Chief of Staff for Manpower, Personnel, and Services.

Air Force officials expect all major commands and field operating agencies will be affected by the hiring freeze.  Personnel can get additional information on the freeze from their civilian personnel offices or at the Total Force Center (800-525-0102).
