The Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) will begin to mark up the FY2012 Defense Authorization bill on Tuesday, June 14. The SASC markup schedule calls for five subcommittees to mark up on June 14:  Airland; Strategic Forces; Seapower; Readiness and Management Support; and Personnel.  On Wednesday, June 15, the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities will conduct their markup.  The full SASC will begin to consider the complete bill on Wednesday afternoon (after all subcommittees finish action) and will continue on Thursday, June 16.  The House passed its version of the bill last month.

SASC chair Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) notified all members that the committee will follow the same policy on earmarks adopted by the Senate Appropriations Committee earlier this year.  Under that policy, the committee will not accept requests from members for funding that is considered an earmark under Senate rules.  The committee will, under normal practice, consider changes to the administration’s request during markup sessions and include an explanation for each change to the request in the committee report.
